Might come down to injuries in camp. BT and Co. don't want to add to an already clogged up system of blueliners.

I think you're mightily underestimating Jokipakka and Engelland. Jokipakka was the biggest steal at the deadline and can be top 4, and Engelland adds some much-needed mean to the back end. We need tough guys like Engelland and Jokipakka was good for us. I like Nakladal too and I would like to re-sign him, but we really aren't hurting as bad as you say.

Kris Russel is still available. I gotta think his asking price has gone down significantly.

I'd so much rather bring Nak back than Russ... it scares me that we keep getting linked to Russell but there's absolutely no word about Nakladal. Even if Russ would sign at 2 mill I'd rather have Nak.

Kevin is good, but he's not a top 4 guy... he's a solid 5-6 and also probably our most likely casualty at the expansion draft.

So that begs the question, why do we need to sign anyone who is good enough that we would sign a 2-3 year deal, in particular Russell & you don't dare give them a NMC or we are losing one of our big 3. The other little bit of pertaining detail is, where is the cap space going to come from to even sign a 2.0mill $ player before we sign Gaudreau? We can't buy anyone out now, we missed the cutoff & we had no one go to arbitration to allow another buyout. People need to think this out. No one is getting signed until Gaudreau gets his new contract. We need to fly with what we have this year. If we have room to sign Nakker after we sign Gaudreau, fine. Personally, we need to get rid of Smid or Wideman before we even do that. Maybe we offer up Klimchuk & Smid for a 4th round pick from Arizona. Tanner loves his propects for free. Maybe some other team will do that as well.

Hey JJ was ranked 30th in that 2011 redraft, he can't be that bad. Johnny ranked 1, Dougie 10. Klefbum was 24th and he's a top pairing according to Oil fans.
I'm happy with our d we can't keep slamming the door on our prospects. Nak may get signed but not until Smid is dealt with.
Englund seems to be Todd's defensive Bouma, the guy has done everything asked of him and still gets no respect! He's definitely over paid but that's not his fault. This team needs sandpaper and he provides that.

I honestly don't care what we do with our 5-7 D spots right now ...sign Johnny ...that's only thing I'm concerned with

Yeah if Engelland was making 1.5 a year no one would have an issue with him.

I agree that any defensive signing is waiting on a determination on Smid's status. Johnny needs to be signed first, then we look at depth with whatever room we have left.

Smart management. If we could have cleared one of Smid, Wideman, Bolig, Stagan I'm sure they would have re upped big Joe.

Wait til Lucic starts face washing Johnny everyone will be happy we have Englund. There no way Nak's dealing with that.

This is a very good point.

And because I own both Lucic and Gaudreau in my keeper league, I could easily see Lucic knocking Johnny's head into next season and getting himself suspended for the year. That's my kind of luck.

It would be pretty tough to compete without my #1 and #3 left wingers.

Lucic won't be that big of a factor against Gaudreau. The thing that makes Johnny so difficult for defenders is his quickness. Lucic is a great pickup for the Oil because he balances their forward group against LARGER opponents, not smaller ones.

Can't see Lucic catching Johnny with his head down. But I can see Lucic being made to look like a Pilon by JG and the retaliating with a little bit of the cheap stuff. I think it will be fun to watch. Lucic gets a bad rap. He is not as much of a goon as he gets credit for (Dbag yes, but goon no). Its more of the guys like Rinaldo (SP?) that I would be worried about.

I don't disagree that Engellund serves a purpose, but I'd still like to see him as our 7th dman. Play him against bigger teams/teams that have guys that we think might try to take liberties with our skilled guys.

Also when Engellund isn't in the lineup it's not like Ferland's some pushover, we could easily toss him on a line with Gaudreau if need be.
